Why choose an Egg Surfboard?

  • Great for intermediate surfers
  • Made for fun
  • Easy to balance
  • Long board stability with short board performance
  • Great for riding smaller, less powerful waves

For someone first getting into surfing, the huge variety of surfboard types can be quite confusing. (Beginners: read more about the egg and other types of surfboards here.) Whether you're just starting out or you're an intermediate surfer wanting something a little shorter and more manoeuverable, an egg surfboard is a great option.

What is an egg surfboard?

An egg surfboard is a type of funboard: a mix between a long board and a short board. Eggs get their name from their rounded, egg shaped nose and their short, almost stubby size. While it is not quite as round as an actual egg, its ovular shape gives it a distinct look.

The characteristic shape and size of an egg surfboard has a few great benefits:

High Surface Area Because of their shape and length, egg boards have a lot of surface area. The high surface area makes it easier for beginners to stand up on the board.

Thickness and Width - Having a board that is wide and thick gives the surfer the ability to paddle and stay afloat more easily. The added buoyancy will allow you to balance easier and is great for surfing smaller waves.

Soft, Rounded Rails - The rails, or the edges, of an egg funboard are softer and more rounded than other boards, which tend to be more forgiving for a beginner learning the ropes.

Length - Egg surfboards are on the medium end of the length scale usually ranging from 6-8.5 feet. This makes it a great choice for the longboarder looking for a little more manoeuverability.

Why ride an Egg surfboard?

Egg surfboards are best suited for beginners and intermediates who are looking to hone their surfing skills. Learning how to surf can be frustrating, as newcomers often find it difficult to balance on their boards. Because of the width of an egg surfboard, it has greater balance and surfers find that it is much easier to stand up on. Also, because of its size and shape, this type of surfboard isn't well suited for smaller waves. Smaller waves require a longer board because your paddle speed is going to be reduced on a shorter board. Since beginners tend to start on small waves, beginners usually opt for a longer board. However, an egg board, with aspects of both short and long boards, is a kind of happy medium giving surfers the best possible mixture of balance and manoeuverability. You don't have to be new to surfing to get joy out of an egg surfboard. Maybe you've been riding a long board for years and are just looking to be able to do some more manoeuvres. An egg is also a great choice for those who have a long board but plan on working their way toward a short board. It can take a lot of practice and patience to get the hang of a short board.

Here are some things to consider when thinking about the transition.

Egg surfboards are perfect to make a seamless transition because they have the same stability that you're used to on a long board, with the fin setup and performance of a short board. Both new and intermediate surfers rave about the egg's dependability and ease of use. The bottom line is that egg surfboards are made for fun. You may not be the flashiest surfer out in the lineup, but you're guaranteed to have a great time.
