How to Do a Turtle Roll

One of the most useful techniques a surfer will ever learn is that of the Turtle Roll. As soon as any surfer with a long board learns how to turtle roll riding the waves will be made so much easier as it allows you to get out to the line-up without any hassles. By following these simple steps you will no longer be wondering how to do a turtle roll.  

 

#1 Paddle towards the wave
When learning how to do a turtle roll the first thing that you’ll have to do is to paddle towards the oncoming wave. By paddling towards the waves with some speed behind you can ensure some stability as you head towards the wave. It is also important to ensure that you’re not at a bad angle as you may risk falling off your board.  

 

#2 Grab the Rails!
Just as the white-water is a board’s length to your surfboard, it’s time to react. By grabbing the rails tight and keeping the nose of the board pointing downward you’ll ensure that you have a good grip on your board. The best way to grab the rails of the board is to position your hands so that your hands are adjacent to the ribs. By holding your hands back in this way you will ensure a sense of stability when performing a turtle roll.  

 

#3 Flip The Board
At this crucial moment, it is important for you to take a deep breath and remain calm as you flip your long board. Whilst retaining that tight grip on the rails, flip the board over, so the fins are visible. When flipping the board it’s recommended that you remain as straight as you possibly can be. When learning how to do a turtle roll, this can be considered one of the most daunting aspects of the process. Though by doing this just as the wave approaches you allow yourself to have more control over the board so there’s no need to panic.  

 

#4 Relax, Hold Your Board Close  
Now that you’re underwater the most important thing to do now is to hold yourself close to the board and remember to maintain a sense of calm. If you begin to feel anxious, it is crucial that you should remain loose and don’t stiffen up under the water. Just hold on to those rails and everything will be fine.  

 

#5 Flip it Again!
Now that the wave has passed you’re free to flip the board keep going. When flipping the board over for the second time it’s important to scoop your body up simultaneously with the board itself. By doing this, it should be much easier to get back on the board and paddle toward the line-up.

Now that you know how to do a turtle roll it’s always important to remember to hold on to your board. Though its not an easy technique to master, it does help your surfing go a long way. So get out there with your branded board and practice!
