Pro skaters have all the gear. From customised boards and shoes to sponsored clothing, they always look fresh. Sponsorships aren’t only for pro skaters. Amateur’s can approach skate companies or local skate shops for sponsorship too. This may include a free shirt, some new wheels or even a new board. Pro skating is different to sponsorship as pro skaters are able to live off skating. It is their livelihood. Companies tend to provide pros with branded equipment and clothing and pay them a lump sum of money on top.

Pro’s also wear protective equipment. To be the very best they have to push themselves and the only way to learn and get better is to make mistakes. Helmets and other padding helps prevent injury when a trick doesn’t quite go to plan.

Pro skaters can do the tricks. Whether it’s the Varial 720, No Handed 50-50 Kickflip or the Switch Varial Heelflip, they can do it. They even make their own, new tricks. Learning tricks takes time but the feeling when you land a trick is like no other. It is invigorating, energising and fulfilling. It makes all the stacks, all the hours of practice and the cuts, breaks and bruises all worth it.

Bucky Lasek is one of a few who can pull off an entire vert run switch. They never miss out on an opportunity to practice these tricks as they have a desire to master the moves and develop their techniques.

Pro skaters video themselves. Watch these videos and learn from them. Then video yourself doing tricks, watch back over it, learn from it and then one day you might be good enough to post them online for others to learn from. Remember to be creative when doing tricks. Everyone has a different style and different technique and its important to develop your own technique, no one has the perfect skating technique. So in short, if you want to be a pro skateboarder, grab a board, put it together, make sure you look the part and practice, practice and practice!
